caravaggio

Caravaggio was an iconic Italian Baroque painter known for his characteristic depiction of light and use of live models. Using the techniques of chiaroscuro, also known as tenebrism, the artist painted shadows to compose forms and highlight areas of color within a given scene. His works are valued for their ability to create lifelike figures in both the rendering of light and color, but also in their psychological presence. The artist died mysteriously on July 18, 1610 in Porto Ercole, Italy. There are many theories surrounding the cause of his death, ranging from a fever to an assassination by Maltese knights. Caravaggio’s works are held in the collections of the Hermitage Museum in St.Petersburg, the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery in London, and the Galleria Borghese in Rome, among others.
